Brevard County is the headwaters of the St. Johns River. Starting with Hell-n-Blazes wetlands, the river flows north all the way to the ocean in Jacksonville through a chain of lakes. These lakes and the river that connect them abound with largemouth bass, crappie, bluegills, catfish, and several species of sunfish. Atlantic shad run from mid-January to March. All of these fish are readily caught on both light spinning rods and fly rods. A freshwater license is required which can be bought on line at www.floridaconservation.org or from a local tackle shop. Freshwater licenses are available to non-residents for 3 or 7 days, or a full year, and start at $17. Children under 16 do not need a license.
